Thoracic Cavity
Anatomical appearance:
Function:
It contains the heart and lungs.
Abdominal Cavity
Anatomical appearance:
Function:
It contains the digestive and urogenital organs.
Diaphragm
Anatomical appearance:
The musculotendinous sheet that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity.
Function:
Separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity.
Larynx
Anatomical appearance:
Commonly called the voice box, is an organ in the top of the neck.
Function:
Involved in breathing, producing sound, and protecting the trachea against food aspiration.
Trachea and Bronchi
Anatomical appearance:
A tube extending from the Larynx
Function:
The air passage is kept open by C-shaped rings. The rings are incomplete on the dorsal surface. Allows for the passage of air.
Thyroid Gland
Anatomical appearance:
Dark brown gland on the ventral surface fo the trachea.
Function:
Is part of the endocrine system, not the respiratory system. produces thyroxine and triiodothyronine hormones
Lung
Anatomical appearance:
The lungs are the primary organs of the respiratory system
Largest respiratory organ.
Function:
Extracts oxygen from the atmosphere and transfer it into the bloodstream, and to release carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere.
