respiratory systems Flashcards
(10 cards)
what materials are absorbed where and why
oxygen and nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream to be deliverd to cells
what materials are removed
carbon dioxide must be removed from cells in the bloodstream
Surfaces involved in the absorption of
materials all have:
a large surface area , thin walls and extensive blood supply
what do capillary network do
tissues contain capillaries network which provides every cell access to the blood system
where does air travel / gas exchange eventually occur
travels in through the nose & mouth into the trachea , this divides into two bronchi one going into each lung and each bronchi’s splits into smaller tubes called bronchioles and at the end ( small air sacs ) called alveoli is where gas exchange occurs
what is gas exchange
the exchange of oxygenated blood diffusing from alveoli to blood and deoxygenated blood (CO2) diffusing from blood to alveoli
where is gas exchange located
betwen alveloi and surround blood capillary vessels
why are alveloi efficient
thin lining - gas can quickly diffuse through it
large surface area - speeds up diffusion because gas has more area to diffuse
good blood supply - allows large volumes of gas to exchanged
journey of CO2 molecule
moves through the body tissues and capillaries and enters heath through vena cava , goes through right Atrium and right ventricle then squeezed out by pulmonary artery , deoxygenated blood travels to lungs and goes through gas exchange then moves through lungs to be breathed out.
