mid-20th century: CFCs and halons started to be used in aerosol cans, cooling systems, foam making, fire extinguishers
- when CFCs are exposed to UV radiation in stratosphere they break down and release molecules that destroy the stratospheric ozone
- Vienna convention and Montreal protocol froze CFC production
