What is diabetes?
A condition where someone cannot control their blood glucose levels.
Type 1 Diabetes is…?
When the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin - therefore treated with injections of insulin or a pancreas transplant.
Type 2 Diabetes is…?
When the liver no longer responds to insulin, it can be treated by controlling carbohydrates in the diet and drugs.
What is the normal body temperature?
37 Degrees Celsius
What are the 5 senses?
Taste, Smell, Sight, Hearing, Touch.
What are the 5 sense groups?
Tongue, Nose, Eyes, Ears, Skin
What are the 5 Stimulus’s?
Chemicals in food, Chemicals in the air, Light, Sound, Temperature & Pressure.
What special cells are sense organs filled with?
Receptors
What do receptors detect to send electrical impulses along nerve cells to the central nervous system (CNS)?
They detected a stimulus (E.g - Light) and then send electrical impulses to the CNS.
What hormones does the pancreas make?
Insulin.
When eating a meal, what in our bloods levels increase?
Our blood glucose levels rise.
What is glucose turned into in the liver?
Glycogen.
What 3 things happens when you are too hot?
- Erector muscles relax so hair lies flat.
- Sweat glands make more sweat.
- Blood vessels grow wider.
What 3 things happen when you are too cold?
- Erector muscles contract so hairs stand up.
- Sweat glands make less sweat.
- Blood vessels become narrower.
