The outer layer of the earth
Crust
A section of the earths crust
Tectonic plate
The dense, mostly solid layer of the earth between the outer core and the crust
Mantle
The circular currents of heat in the mantle
Convection currents
A plate margin where two plates move towards each other forcing one to sink below it
Destructive margin
A plate margin where two plates are moving apart
Constructive plate margin
When oceanic crust sinks under continental crust at a destructive margin
Subduction
A plate margin where two plates are sliding alongside each other
Conservative plate margin
A steep-sided volcano that is made up of a variety of materials, such as lava and ash
Composite volcano
A broad volcano that is mostly made up of lava.
Shield volcano
The immediate effects of a hazard caused directly by it
Primary effects
The after effects that occur as an indirect effect of a hazard on a longer timescale
Secondary effects
How people react during a disaster and straight afterwards
Immediate responses
Later reactions that happen in the weeks, months and years after the effect
Long term responses
A mega volcano that erupts at least a thousand kilometres of material
Super Volcano
