What is retinitis pigmentosa?
An inherited disorder that causes progressive visual loss and night blindness due to degeneration of the rod cells
What are the inheritance patterns of retinitis pigmentosa?
Autosomal dominant
Autosomal recessive
X-linked
What is the presentation of retinitis pigmentosa?
Tunnel vision - damage to peripheral retina
Reduced visual acuity in dim light
Difficulty adapting to low light conditions
Loss of central vision comes later
What is seen on fundoscopy in retinitis pigmentosa?
Peripheral bone-spicule pigmentation
Optic disc pallor
Retinal vessel attenuation
What is the management of retinitis pigmentosa?
Visual aids
