Return of the Vikings Flashcards
(4 cards)
Where had the Vikings been 885-892?
Whilst Alfred was busy reforming his military during the 880s, The Franks had been subject to a large-scale Danish onslaught similar to that of the Great Heathen Army in 860s Britain - the main force of the Danes had moved to the continent following Alfred’s victory at Edington, probably believing the civil-war ridden Franks to be a much easier target.
- The Viking forces came up against the East Frankish king, Arnulf, in 891, who massively beat the Viking forces
- Therefore, by the start of 892, the Vikings were desparate, forced to the coast by Arnulf’s forces, famine hit and were also starving. - the Franks then aided them in their motivation to leave Francia, by providing 250 ships to them.
What happened when the Vikings first returned back upon English soil?
The Vikings who were forced out of Francia, set up a base at Appledore, Kent
- At roughly the same time, a separate army led by Viking commander Hastein (with 80 ships) made a camp at Milton
How did Alfred’s reforms impact his capabilities of taking on the Vikings in their return?
Egs.
- Battle of Buttingdon 893 - Earldormen Aethelred of Mercia was supported by troops of many local burhs (rapidly assembled) & able to ‘overtake’ Viking forces = resulted in a significant victory
- Alfred’s new longships built in 896 - in one engagement 62 English killed 130 Danes
What happened to the Vikings who returned at the end?
Eventually the Danes gave up on England for good and returned to Francia
