(18 cards)
What are the characteristics of a CONSTRUCTIVE WAVE?
Strong swash weak backwash
What are the characteristics of a DESTRUCTIVE WAVE?
Strong backwash weak swash
What are the 4 types of coastal erosion?
Hydraulic action, Atrition, Abrasion, Corrosion.
What does Hydraulic action mean?
Erosionn from waves where water gets into the cracks.
What does Attrition mean?
Rocks in the water hit together and become smoother and smaller.
What does Abrasion mean?
Waves carry rocks and then hit into cliffs.
What does Corrosion mean?
Chemical reactions in the water with salt and chemicals.
What patter does Long Shore Drift go in?
A Zig-Zag pattern.
What is Long Shore Drift?
The movement of sedement (e.g. sand and rocks etc)along the coast.
What is a headland?
An area of hard rock that sticks out to sea with softer rock either side.
How does a spit form?

What is a Salt marsh?
An area of protected water (could be found behind a spit) that is very calm. Plants can grow in it.
What is Hard Engineering?
Schemes of sea defences that are Man-Made.
What are some examples of Hard Engineering?
Groynes, Sea walls, Rip rap, Revetments etc
What is Soft Engineering?
Sea defences which allow natural processes to continue.
What are some examples of Soft Engineering?
Beach Nourishment, Managed retreat, Cliff regrading etc.
What is the top of the wave called?
The Crest
What is the bottom of the wave called?
The Trough
