Revision for test-metaphysics Flashcards
(18 cards)
Syntax
rules for arranging symbols in the correct order in a sentence-John searle
Semantic
meaning of a word-John Searle
substance dualism
the mind and body are distinct and separate-Rene Descartes
Monism
only 1 substance-Jack smart
Physicalism
Everything in our world is physical and made of matter, including our mind-Jack smart
Qualia
feeling of conscious experience, the what it is like’ components of something-Frank Jackson
Idealism
objects of knowledge depending on activity of mind, world is non-physial
Metaphysics
study of what is real, ie what reality is.
Mental substance
Qualities of the mind-private and on-observable
material substance
physical matter-public and observable
hard problem of consciousness
trying to explain why we have consciousness at all and how the mind interacts with the physical world
Artificial intelligence
computer/machine system that is believed to act in a conscious way
Nomological dangler
something that would exist outside of known physical laws
After-Image
Used in Jack smarts paper, after-image is the conscious experience of an image after exposure
Descartes argument for substance dualism
Descartes believes his mind’s existence is indubitable, unlike his body, which he doubts due to flawed senses. This distinction suggests mind and body are different substances.
two implications that follow if dualism is true
An implication is an afterlife, as the mind might survive the body. Another is AI impossibility, as the non-physical mind can’t be replicated.
summarise Turing test and explain relevance to mind body problem
The Turing Test, with typed messages, assesses if a machine can convince an interviewer it’s human, demonstrating possible machine consciousness and material intelligence.
john Searle think that ai mahcines cannot pass turing test
John Searle argues A.I. lacks true understanding despite passing the Turing Test. Machines follow syntax but lack semantics. The Chinese room experiment illustrates this: someone arranging Chinese symbols by rules seems to understand Chinese but doesn’t. Similarly, computers mimic understanding without genuine comprehension.
