reasons for the comuneros revolt
A
- resentment over charles leaving spain
- hated foreigners who filled important positions/offices as seen as taking wealth of spain out the country
- fear that spain would lost separate identity as part of empire & charles wouldn’t return
- resentment over charles asking for money twice over three years

list the demands made by the junta of the tordesillas in 1520 when petitioning to charles (some of reasons for revolt reflected in these)

- live in castile
- bring no ‘Flemings, Frenchmen, nor natives of any other country’ to fill the positions in his household
- follow the customs of the ‘Catholic Sovereigns Don Fernando and Dona Isabel, his grandparents’

describe the beginning of the comuneros revolt
A
- started in toledo
- juan de padilla took command & set up government in name of the king, the queen (joanna) & the comunidad = indicates not a revolution aimed at overthrowing the king
- toledo’s lead followed by other towns (eg. segovia, salamanca & valladolid)
- supporters of rebellion mainly lower nobility & town dwellers

- prepared to show support when meeting with some of comuneros, but wouldn’t commit herself to rebellion on paper
- meant leaders of revolt had no claim to legality
