Writs Of Assistance
British officers with open-ended search warrants. Colonists protest, “no privacy of property”.
Commitees of Correspondence
A communication network between the colonies that was meant to keep colonists aware of the king’s violation of rights.
Townshend Acts
The Parliment placed restrictions on the colonists trading and taxed glass, tea, and lead. The colonists protested and smuggled a lot.
Salutary Neglect
The British let the colonists prosper and benefit them without enforcing any commerce laws. When laws were enforced, Americans became upset.
Intolerable/Coercive Acts
Boston’s punishment for the Boston Tea Party and other acts of rebellion. Colonists got mad and this leads to the continental congress. This also brought colonists together to support Boston.
Paul Revere
Part of Sons of Liberty. Known for his midnoght ride when he warned Lexington & Concord about the British troops.
Benjamin Franklin
World-renowned scientist, inventor, and writer who helped write the D.O.I. He was very influential in the 2nd Continental Congress and flew to France to negotiate an alliance.
Mercy Otis Warren
Famous poet/playwright that mocked/criticized the British King and greatly supported independence.
Marquis de Lafayette
French aristocrat who personally financed the revolution. Was a major general under George Washington.
Patriots Advantages and British Disadvantages
Patriots know the land and are fighting for a cause whereas the British were coming from across the ocean and don’t really care about winning. British won in the begining, but due to advantages, Patriots win.
Declaratory Act
Britain repealed the stamp act but stated that they could make laws and pass taxes.
Yorktown
CA and French surround British at Yorktown, VA. Last battle of the revolution and forces Cornwallis to surrender.
Tea Act
An act that taxed tea and stated that you could only but tea from Britain. Colonists were enraged, this caused the Boston Tea Party.
Proclamtion Line Of 1763
Britain didn’t let colonists settle on the land won from the French-Indian war because of possible Native American attacks. They didn’t want to pay for protection, but the angry colonists settled anyway.
Valley Forge
A harsh winter in Pennsylvania. Many died due to disease and lack of supplies. Von Steuben trained the CA and they improved significantly, winning more battles.
Saratoga
First major victory for CA, won in 2 days. Turning point of the war, causing French to recognize America’s potential. This led to a treaty of alliance.
Lexington & Concord
First battle of the AR. British retreated and Americans won.
Haym Salomon
Jewish man who was part of the Sons of Liberty. Super rich so he personally financed the war.
Thomas Paine
A famous author during the american revolution. who saved the troops at Valley Forge and turned many colonists into Patriots with his work.
Common Sense and The American Crisis
CS: A widely read influential phamplet that represented popular arguements for American Independence.
AC: A series of inspirational articles that urged Americans to perservere through “the times that try men’s souls”.
Sons Of Liberty
A protest organization formed by Sam Adams. They made protests happen when needed. For example, Paul Revere, Sam Adams, the Boston Tea Party, and the Boston Massacre.
Patrick Henry
1st and 6th governor of Virginia and a founding father. His speech, “give me liberty or give me death,” inspired Patriots to join the cause and stop the British.
Stamp Act
A tax on printed items, such as playing cards and printed documents. Caused the stamp act congress.
Boycotts
A tyoe of protest where colonists refrain from buying British goods so they wouldn’t be taxed. Very effective, Britain repealed many acts. Examples: Tea and british goods.
