Why was there an Industrial Revolution in Britain?
New inventions, trading partners across the Empire and access to raw material such as coal.
How did work change from 1750-1900?
In 1750, most people worked in agriculture or at home in the domestic industry. By 1900, most people
had moved to towns to work in factories, mills and railways.

Canal building began in the 1750s. The first canal was
Bridgewater canal. The first railway line was opened in 1825.

A water frame to produce cotton yarn.

Pollution made it very difficult to see. The streets and pathways were very narrow.
Lighting was poor. Some women had to resort to prostitution.

The Government ordered a slum clearance. Trade Unions were set up to represent the rights of the working class.

Worked long hours, employed children under 10
Who was Robert Owen?
A factory owner who sought to improve the working conditions in factories by
introducing short work hours, free healthcare and education.
What was the Factory Act and why was it passed?
The Factory Act (1833) stopped the employment of young children under the age of 9 and limited the hours that 9-13 year olds could work. It was passed to give more rights and protection to workers.

France was bankrupt while the King and landowners were living a luxury.
Why was the French Revolution a turning point in History?
Louis XVI was finally removed from power in 1792 and France became a republic
