Rhabdoviridae Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is in negri bodies and what occurs here?
Fully assembled or partly assembled virions, many rabies virus structural proteins, and RNA polymerase. This is where virus replication occurs.
What are the two forms and symptoms of a rabies virus infection?
- Dumb: Neocortex infected causing paralysis, coma and death.
- Furious: Limbic system infected causing encephalitis, muscle tremors, ataxia, hydrophobia, dysphagia, and aggression.
What is the genome of rhabdoviridae
-ssRNA
Is Rhabdoviridae enveloped or nonenveloped?
Enveloped
What type of tissue do rabies viruses infect?
Neurons, muscle cells and salivary glands
What tissues need to be evaluated to properly diagnose rabies?
Brainstem and cerebellum
Is there any gross pathology associated with rabies virus infection?
NO
Which viruses cause viral vesicular disease in livestock?
- Foot and mouth disease virus (picornar)
- Swine vesicular disease virus (picornar)
- Vesicular exanthema of swine virus (calici)
- Vesicular stomatitis virus (Rhabdo)
What is a Negri body?
a. Inclusion body in the nucleus
b. Inclusion body in the cytoplasm
c. Inclusion body in the neurons
d. Inclusion body in the oligocytes
B.
Which protein is important for entry of rabies virus?
G proteins…surface glycoproteins
What are the species affected by viral vesicular disease?
Cattle, sheep, horses and swine
What is common between viral vesicular disease and rabies?
The viruses have the same morphology, genome and replication strategy, but they infect different tissue.
What type of disease is associated with VSV infection?
Excessive salivation
Vesicles on mouth, muzzle and snout.
What is the capsid shape for Rhabdoviridae?
What is the shape of the virion?
Helical
Bullet with spike surface proteins
Is the genome of rhabdoviridae segmented or nonsegmented?
Non-segmented
Is the genome capable of RNA editing?
What other virus does this that we learned about?
Yes
Paramyxoviridae
How do rhabdoviruses enter a host cell?
Attach to receptors such as nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and neural cell adhesion molecule CD56 , then pinocytosis/endocytosis occurs…all mediated by G proteins.
What is the incubation times for the rabies virus?
9 days to 2 months or longer (7 years)
How can variants in the genotype of the rabies virus be differentiated?
Antibody response or PCR
What is the pathogenesis of the rabies virus?
Bit wound- virus multiplies in myocytes- travels up peripheral nerves to CNS-multiplies in the CNS- moves out of peripheral nerves to salivary gland, skin, mucosal surface, the GI, and other organs.
What test should be done on animals suspected for rabies?
Direct fluorescent antibody test (FA)
What rabies vaccines are used in animals and humans?
Animal: live and killed vaccines
Human: killed vaccine grown in human fibroblasts
How can you treat human that may have been infected with rabies?
Rabies immune globulin injected
What is the only vesicular virus that infects horses called?
Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)
