Ribs Flashcards
(23 cards)
Atypical Rib
1, 2, 11, 12; sometimes 10
True Rib
1-7; cartilage attaches to sternum
False Ribs
8-10;cartilage attaches to costal cartilage of the above rib
Floating Ribs
11-12
Pump handle
move superiorly and anteriorly
increase AP diameter
3-7
Bucket handle
move superiorly and laterally
increase transverse diameter
1-2, 8-10
Caliper
•Downward and posteriorly with inhalation
•Upward and anteriorly with exhalation
11-12
Rib 1 muscle attachment
anterior and middle scalenes
rib 2 muscle attachment
posterior scalene
ribs 3-5 muscle attachments
pectoralis minor
ribs 6-8 muscle attachments
serratus anterior
ribs 9-10 muscle attachments
latissimus dorsi
ribs 11-12 muscle attachments
quadratus lumborum
•Ribs 1, 10, 11, 12
Only articulate with
their own vertebrae (not
the one above as well)
•Ribs 11, 12
•Do not have tubercles
(and therefore do not
articulate with
transverse processes)
TORSIONAL MOVEMENT
• When T5 is rotated to the right (on T6) • Posterior aspect of the right sixth rib turns externally • Posterior aspect of the left sixth rib turns internally • anterior extremity of the right sixth rib becomes more flat with its inferior border sharp • anterior extremity of the left sixth rib having its superior margin accentuated
NON-PHYSIOLOGIC MOVEMENT
• Due to trauma or repetitive micro-
trauma
• Rib becomes subluxed anteriorly
or posteriorly.
levator ani
puborectalis
pubococcygeus
ileoccygeus
lumbar plexus
L1-L4
sacral plexus
L5-S4
coccygeal plexus
S5-coccygeal nerve
form closure
the specific properties of the articular surfaces of the SIJ -Form closure requires the proper size, shape, and attitude of the articulating surfaces -due to how the joints fit together
force closure
the compression produced by body
weight, muscle action, and ligament force
-due to gravity and loading forces, muscle, fasica, and ligaments
