Ribs Flashcards
What do rib heads articulate with?
with its own vertebra and the vertebra above
What does the tubercle of the rib articulate with?
transverse process of corresponding vertebra
What ribs only articulate with their own vertebrae?
Ribs 1, 10, 11, 12
What ribs do not have tubercles?
Ribs 11, 12

What direction do ribs 11 and 12 move?
Downward and posterior with inhalation
Upward and superior with exhalation
What is a subluxation?
incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint or organ
What is torsional movement?
Vertebrae rotated, causes ribs to rotate
What is non-physiologic movement?
occurs due to trauma or repetitive microtrauma, rib becomes subluxed anteriorly or posteriorly
What is an inhalation dysfunction?
rib being held in a position of inhalation, motion toward inhalation is free
What is an exhalation dysfunction?
rib being held in a position of exhalation, motion toward exhalation is free
What is the key rib to be treated in an inhalation and exhalation dysfunction?
Inhalation: bottom rib
Exhalation: top rib
