Riggs Et Al Flashcards
(7 cards)
Method
Independent measures
Randomised controlled
CBT directed at substance abuse rather than depression
Participants
126 adolescents with depression
Also had diagnosed conduct disorder and substance abuse disorder
Procedure
16 weeks being treated with either:
Fluoxetine and a course of CBT directed at dealing with substance abuse
Placebo and a course of CBT directed at substance abuse
Results
Combination of fluoxetine and CBT may be the most effective option as it led to significant improvements in one measure of depression in comparison with CBT and placebo
Conclusion
Fluoxetine and CBT had greater results than placebo and CBT on one depression measure
Fluoxetine and CBT wasn’t associated with less substance abuse and les conduct disorder
The CBT that focused in conduct disorder may have contributed to the mixed effectiveness findings
aim
To evaluate effectiveness of fluoxetine vs placebo in combination with CBT on depression, substance abuse disorder and conduct disorder
Background
Aim of cognitive therapy is to change negative thoughts into positive ones (irrational to rational)
Four assumptions underlying CBT:
1) patients respond to situations in bais of own negative interpretations
2) thoughts behaviour and feelings are inter related and influence each other. Recognise all equally important
3) therapists need to change way people think about themselves and world
4) necessary to change beliefs and behaviour
