How has the issue of healthcare been helped?
In Santa Marta, a favela 7km away from the nearest hospital, medics came into homes with medkits and treated residents for many kinds of diseases
How has the issue of education been helped?
In Rocinha, local authorities have created grants for poor children to be able to go to school. They have also encouraged people to go to school by raising money to pay for free lessons in sports
What is the cultural importance of Rio?
The 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup was hosted there. The statue of Christ the Redeemer is also one of the 7 wonders of the world.
Why is it economically important?
- Produces 5% of Brazil’s GDP
- Second largest industrial site after Sao Paulo
- A major port exporting sugar, coffee and iron ore.

How is water pollution being combatted?
12 new sewage works have been built.
Examples of waste pollution?
Favelas are built on steep slopes so community garbage trucks cannot reach them. Waste is usually just thrown on the streets
How is waste pollution being combatted?
A methane powerplant has been set up near the University of Rio.
It uses 30 tonnes of rubbish everyday and provides electricity for 1000 homes
What was the favela Bairro project?
The local authorities provided land and services for residents to build homes by themselves
Successes of the Favela Bairro project?
- A police unit was set up that monitors the area (decreasing crime)
- Hillsides were secured to reduce threat of landslides
- Paved and formally named roads
Failures of the Favela Bairro project?
- The budget of US$1B may not cover every favela
- Residents may not have the expertise to repair homes by themselves
- The newly built infrastructure is not being maintained
