  • Germany was forced to take the blame for the war (war guilt clause)
  • Germany had to pay compensation for the damage caused to the Allies- reparations of £6600 million
  • Army was cut to 100,000 and no tanks on Military aircrafts were allowed
  • Germany lost 13% of its land meaning it more than 6 million German people suddenly became non-German citizens
  • Cattle and sheep were given to Belgium and France as reparations
  • Germany was not allowed in the league of Nations serving their country was seen as an outcast

  • Germans give them a chance rather than further violence and communist revolution
  • before Stresemann died 1929 - introduced new currency, got loans from America and got into LON- stable economically and politically
  • in 1925 Hindenburg elected as president, former war leader showed promising leadership

  • Born out of defeat
  • No single party so no majority- unstable&weak coalition gov
  • Difficult to see who had more power -Parliament or President with article 48
  • Germans not used to democracy
  • Army leaders wanted Kaiser
  • Economic instability- inflation&hyperinflation
  • Recovety relief too much on USA’s economy (wall St crash disastrous)
