- Had a crucial impact on German politics
- Growth of the economy and greater need for administration, teaching, scientific research and the legal profession, as cities expanded
- (example) In Prussia, the civil service grew from 80,000in 1850 to 250,000 in 1907, number of school teachers expanded by 43% in 1891 and 1913 and the number of doctors doubled in 1876 and 1913.
- Expansion of industry led to greater jobs- led to more social mobility in the kaiserreich as many Germans from trad lower middle classes were able to take higher more skilled positions as white collar workers.
- From 1882 to 1907 number of self employed aritsans of the German workforce decreased from 25. 4% to 18.8%
Number of white collar workers inc from 4.7% to 10% - Rise of white collar workers had important social consquences within Germany - tended to have better pay, housing, health than the working class, viewed themselves sep from working class. Seen in 1901, when white collar political groups organised themselves into co-ordinating committee that agrued for a sep states insurance scheme for white collar workers- successful in 1911
