Risks Flashcards
(10 cards)
Why measure risk?
To infirm the public Modify behaviour Selection of patients for interventions Assess effectiveness of interventions Deliver health services
What is absolute risk?
Absolute risk = incidence of disease in a given population
What is relative risk?
Relative risk assesses if having the risk factor increases the likelihood of getting disease
What is the calculation for RR?
Incidence in those with risk factor/incidence in those without risk factor
what is attributable risk?
incidence of cases in those with risk factor that are due to presence of risk factor
What is the calculation for Attributable risk?
Incidence of disease in exposed - incidence of disease in unexposed (no rf)
What is Population Attributable risk (PAR)?
Incidence of cases among whole population (exposed and not exposed) that are due to the exposure
what is the calculation for PAR
AR x prevalence of exposure
prevalence of exposure = exposure number/total
what is a primary prevention method for reducing cardiovascular disease?
reduce risk of getting the disease
what is a secondary prevention method for reducing cardiovascular disease?
reduce the risks associated with having the disease
