2
Q

what is the formation of the v shaped valleys (how)

A

As the river cuts down into the landscape in an upland area with vertical erosian, gravity and mass movement roll material down the valley sides to give the valley a ‘v’ shape

A

formed when a river passes through mountains or is cutting through a band of hard rock

Q

Wot are waterfalls

A

steep drop in the bed of a river causing the water in the river to fall vertically

8
Q

explanation of waterfalls ( formation)

A

band of harder rock crosses the path of a river. the river is less able to erode this harder rock and leaves it as a step in the river’s long profile

10
Q

explanation of how alluvial fan formed

A

speed of flow is suddenly greatly reduced. when this happens river is unable to carry much of its load and this alluvium is laid down in a fan shape

13
Q

formed how meander

A

lateral erosian of the river channel results in the river forming a winding pattern. as water flows down the river, its speed i faster on the outside of the meander causing erosian and slower on the inside of the meander resulting in deposition.

what are ox bow lakes

A

cut off section of a meander in the river channel which forms a ‘c’ shape.

15
Q

how is it formed ox bow lakes

A

loops in a meander eroding the flood plain untill eventually the loop in the meander is left cut off from the main river channel.

16
Q

what are flood plains

A

large flat land by either side of a river. this usually becomes wider as the river nears its mouth

17
Q

how are flood plains formed

A

when the river overflows its bank, layers of alluvium are laid down.

18
Q

flood plains are a prime site for agriculture why?

A

the soil is thick and fertile and the land is flat

19
Q

what are river terraces

A

areas of flat land located on either side of the flood plain which are raised above the flood plain.

20
Q

why might river terraces be a better site for settlement than floodplains

A

floods can’t reach

21
Q

how are river terraces formed

A

the river terraces used to be the flood plain but the river has cut down deeper and formed a new flood plain at a lower level

22
Q

levees wot r they

A

mounds of alluvium piled up along the river’s edge

23
Q

how are levees formed

A

formed by the river depositing the sediment(load such as pebbles, gravel and sand) close to the river channel when the river floods (on the edges). This happens because usually when the warer overflows the river bank, its speed is greatly reduced

24
Q

why are artificial levees build

A

prevent flooding

25
what are deltas
area of sandy/muddy sediment buuilt up into an open water where a river meets the sea or a loch
26
how are deltas formed
when a river meets the sea or a lake and it speed is slowed down, then deposition on its bed can lead to braiding taking place. this deposition results in the river bed being built up into the sea or lake
27
what are distributaries
a stream that branches off and flows away from main stream stream channel
28
what is an estauray
where river meets the sea. river is tidal and when sea retreats the volume of water in estaury is reduced
29
usefullness of estaurys?
when there is less water the river deposits silt to form mudflats which are an important habitat for wildlife.
