5
Q

abrasion

A

the bed and banks are worn doen by the rivers load . the river throws particles against the bed and banks

6
Q

attrition

A

material (the load) carried by the river bump into eachother and so are smoothed and broken down into smaller particles

Q

corrosion

A

chemical action of river water. the acids in the water slowly dissolve the bed and banks if the river particullarly limestone

Q

example of destructive margins

A

The atacama trench along the West Coast of South America, the oceanic Nazca plate is being subducted beneath the continental South American plate.

Q

Example of a conservative margin

A

at the San Andreas fault the Pacific plate is moving in the same direction as the North American plate but faster

Q

How does a volcano occur at a destructive margin

A

The denser oceanic plate moves down into the mantle where it melts. A pool of magma forms, which then rises through cracks in the crust called vents. The magma erupts forming a volcano

16
Q

How does a volcano occur at constructive plate margins

A

The magma rises up into the gap created by the plates moving apart forming volcano

Q

What are earthquakes caused by

A

The tension that builds up at all three types of plate margin

18
Q

how does tension buildup at destructive margins

A

one plate gets stuck as it moves past together

19
Q

How does tension buildup at constructive margins

A

Along cracks in the plates as they move away from each other

20
Q

How does tension buildup at conservative margin

A

Plates that are grinding past each other gets stuck

21
Q

When was New Zealand’s earthquake

22
Q

what was the magnitude of New Zealand’s earthquake

23
Q

What is the GDP per capita of New zealand

24
Q

How many people died in the New Zealand earthquake

A

Two people died and 50 people were injured

25
How many homes were destroyed in the New Zealand earthquake
Tens of thousands
26
What is the magnitude of the earthquake in Nepal
7.8
27
When was the earthquake in Nepal
2015
28
What is the GDP per capita of Nepal
US $690
29
How many people died in the Nepal earthquake
9000 people and 22,000 injured
30
31
What was New Zealand’s immediate response
Paul is resorted to most places within a few hours
32
What was the immediate response of Nepal earthquake
Charities such as Oxfam provided medicine food and temporary water supplies
33
why do people choose to live at areas of risk
They’ve always lived there oh they’re confident that the government will support them after an earthquake option
34
MPPP
Monitoring, prediction, protection, planning
35
Define a tropical storm
Intense low pressure weather systems with heavy rain and strong winds that spiral around the centre
36
Features of a tropical storm
Circular in shape, hundreds of kilometres wide, usually last 7 to 14 days, they spin anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere, and clockwise in the southern hemisphere
37
when was typhoon Haiyan
2013
38
how many people died in typhoon Haiyan
6300 people
39
how many homes were damaged by typhoon HAIYAN
1 million
40
what was an immediate response of typhoon haiyan
Many charities offered aid in the form of food shelter and clean water
41
Why do you slip off slopes for meanders
Slip-off slopes form on the inside bend of a meander because the water flow is slower there. This slower flow leads to deposition of sediment, gradually building up a gentle, sloping bank known as a slip-off slope.
