river terminology part 2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
episodic river
special type of non perennial river , only flows after heavy rain
exotic river
is a perennial water but gets its water from upstream not the water table
flood surge
water level rising rapidly after rainfall
friction index
amount of friction water experiences with the river bed
graded stream
river with smooth concave longitudinal profile able to carry its load along the entire length of the river
headward erosion
due to the river eroding down into it own course the gradient gets steeper which will eventually lead to river getting longer in length
hydrograph
graph showing runoff against time
incised river / meander
river that has eroded down to its own river bed
interfluve
high land between two streams in the same drainage basin
knick point
sharp change in angle of slope
lag time
time taken between max rainfall and max runoff
lateral erosion
river slows down near base level of erosion and spreads sideways
levee
deposition embankment found along the bank of rivier in the lower course
longitudinal profile
view from top to bottom of river
meandering channel
river twisting side to side usually in lower course
