What is attrition ?

A

When rocks carried by the river smash into each other becoming smaller and rounder

13
Q

How are waterfalls formed ?

A

> Hard rock is undercut by erosion of the soft rock
A plunge pool is formed
The overhang collapses due to lack of support
Gradually the waterfall retreats

14
Q

Describe a cross section of a meander

A

> Sand and shingle is deposited on the inside of the bend where there is a slower current
The bank on the outside of the bend is being undercut by lateral erosion, as this is where the fastest current is

15
Q

What is deposition ?

A

It is when the river drops off the material it is carrying e.g. rocks

16
Q

Where does deposition take place ?

A

It takes place on the inside of a bend

17
Q

What is a meander ?

A

a bend in the river

18
Q

How is a V-Shaped valley formed ?

A

> Rocks cause vertical erosion
Rain washes and wears the softer rock away
The rain then causes landslides
The hard rock doesn’t wear away as easily which causes interlocking spurs
