What is a tributary
A small river or stream which joins into a main river
What is a meander
A bend in a river where lateral erosion will cause it to migrate across the landscape
What is a flood plain
A low flat area a of land that forms the lower part of a river. Meanders migrate across it and it is caused by lateral erosion
What are levees
These can firm artificially or naturally. They are mounds of sediment build up on the banks of the river, which become a flood prevention strategy.
What is a flood
Where there is too much water for the capacity of the channel and it overflows into floodplain surrounding it.
Vertical erosion
Erosion downwards onto the landscape

Erosion sideways across the landscape

The area of land drained by a river and it’s tributaries

Particles carried (suspended) within the water
Deposition
Where water slows down or reduced in volume, it will drop the material it is carrying

An imaginary line representing the highest point of land
