The dancers perform frantic lifts in duets which reflects the mood of the music, which has fast high-pitched strings; this contrasts to the final moments of the dance where main ensemble dancers’ work in twos around the death and the maiden who are centre stage, they walk slowly and the music has long sustained string notes.
Explain how Graham Influence is used in D&TM.
In the first duet, Graham technique is evident in the use of sudden change in the spine from high release to forward contractions in response to corresponding sharp rhythmic changes in the music.
Explain how Ballet is used in D&TM.
North retains that Ballet is at the centre of his work and central to the training of the dancers under his leadership, alongside Graham technique.
Faster balletic footwork echoes the fast pace and change of energy as the girl tries to escape ‘death’.
Explain how Jazz is used in D&TM.
North uses a low centre of gravity with strong, often sharp movement accents with body isolations.
This can be seen when the maiden contracted over by the left leg of death, turns her head isolated from the rest of body slowly, to look out to the audience.
