RNA Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
State the components of RNA
A
- A single stranded polynucleotide
- pentose sugar ribose
- nitrogenous purine bases adenine and guanine
- nitrogenous pyrimidine bases cytosine and uracil no thymine
2
Q
What is mRNA function and where is it made
A
- messenger RNA
- synthesised in the nucleus
- carries genetic code from the DNA to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm
Different mRNA have different lengths related to the lengths of the gene from which they are transcribed
3
Q
What is rRNA where is it made and what is its function
A
- ribosomal rRNA
- found in the cytoplasm
- comprises large complex molecules
- made up of rRNA and protein
- the site of translation of the genetic code into protein
4
Q
What is tRNA
A
- transfer RNA
- small single stranded molecule
- folds so in places there are base sequences forming complementary pairs
- 3’ end of the molecule has the base seq CCA where the specific amino acid the molecule carries is attached
- it also carries a seq of three cases called the anticodon at the bottom of the molecule
- function - transport specific amino acids to the ribosome in protein synthesis .
