-The countries total wealth doubled between 1920 & 1929

Characteristics of the 20s

A
  1. Cultural Civil War - great changes in sexual, artistic and cultural norms
    *old conservative Christian values and traditions (rural) were questioned and replaced with new liberal, anti-Christian ideas (urban)
  2. Continued Immigrant tensions- US vs them mentality. Everything that was bad in society (Alcohol, flappers, crime, and jazz was blamed on immigrants, catholics, and black (Urban dwellers) *many said that these groups were destroying the values of America
  3. Beginning of the “Modern Age” - a period of cultural, social, and technological innovation in the United States. Out with the old ideas of the Victorian Age in with the new
    4, Consumerism - the acquisition of material goods beyond what is necessary. The perceived wealth of the 20s created a “consumer society” for the 1st time thing purchased on credit (everyone acted like they had money) - Buy now, pay later
