The 20s
A period of great change, economic prosperity and optimism
-The countries total wealth doubled between 1920 & 1929
Problem - wealth was not equally distributed
Characteristics of the 20s
- Cultural Civil War - great changes in sexual, artistic and cultural norms
*old conservative Christian values and traditions (rural) were questioned and replaced with new liberal, anti-Christian ideas (urban) - Continued Immigrant tensions- US vs them mentality. Everything that was bad in society (Alcohol, flappers, crime, and jazz was blamed on immigrants, catholics, and black (Urban dwellers) *many said that these groups were destroying the values of America
- Beginning of the “Modern Age” - a period of cultural, social, and technological innovation in the United States. Out with the old ideas of the Victorian Age in with the new
4, Consumerism - the acquisition of material goods beyond what is necessary. The perceived wealth of the 20s created a “consumer society” for the 1st time thing purchased on credit (everyone acted like they had money) - Buy now, pay later
New modern inventions
made life easier. inventions like automobiles, radios, and household appliances all purchased on credit
Great migration
Blacks move from the South to the Northern cities- created more racial tension
Red Scare
A fear that there was going to be a communist takeover of the American government
Prohibition
18th Amendment- Noble experiment - 1919 - 1933
Led by the Women’s temperance union
-Illegal to buy or sell alcohol
Volstead Act
closed all bars taverns and saloons in the USA
Gangsters
Bootleggers ran illegal alcohol businesses/brought booze from Canada
Gangsters like Al Capone (Chicago) Crime greatly increased in America
Speakeasies
Underground alcohol/dance clubs
*Cops paid off
