The Bonus March of 1932

A

WWI veterans were promised their pensions in 1945. Texas congressman was approached by a veteran and said he would sponsor a bill to get the veterans their pensions earlier. They went to Washington to demand cash payment of pensions. Herbert Hoover sent in Douglas MacArthur with the U.S. Army to disperse the Bonus March. The veterans were told to leave. Fires broke out after shooting broke out. Veterans had guns. Eleven were killed.
SIGNIFICANCE - It really hurt Herbert Hoover politically.

Opposition - The American Liberty Leauge (ALL) called it communistic and unAmerican because it was run by the government. Plus it would cost a lot of money.

Long-Term Effects: Greatest domestic achievment of FDR’s presidency. Greatest piece of social warfare in American history.
