Rock Cycle Flashcards
(9 cards)
Igneous Rock
Igneous rocks form when hot molten rock crystallizes and solidifies. “The melt originates deep within the Earth near active plate boundaries or hot spots, then rises toward the surface.”
Sedimentary rock
Sedimentary rock is formed when sediment is deposited in the air or ocean, then weather and erosion break down a rock into loose material in a source area and the sediment basically combines with rock material.
Metamorphic rock
Metamorphic rocks are formed when the rock is subjected to heat or the earths pressure caused by the earths tectonic plates.
Crystallization
Crystallization is made when magma cools it forms into a igneous rock and while the magma cools, the crystals are being formed at different temperatures.
Lithification
Lithification is when clay and sand or other sediments on the body’s of the ocean slowly compact or form and turn into a sedimentary rock.
Sediment
Sediment is a liquid, that is carried by rivers and deposited in lakes and oceans when this happens it gets buried and loses it’s liquid form and becomes cemented to form into a sedimentary rock.
Deposition
Deposition is when small particles of rocks or sediment is deposited into the ocean or lakes.
Weathering
Weathering is when rain, wind or other types of weather break down rocks and minerals and transports them to the ocean.
Erosion
Erosion is when erosion breaks down small rocks and sediment and the wind transports them or moves them.
