At the start of the novel, Roger, like the rest is civilised, innocent and longing to return to the structure of society

As the novel progresses, though, we start to see a change in Roger’s appearance as Golding foreshadows what he’s capable of.

The breakdown of civilisation amongst the boys becomes clear as they spend more time without rules & Roger engages in increasingly violent behaviour

For the first time, Golding reveals just how dangerous Roger is and foreshadows that Roger will eventually surpass even Jack’s violence.

In the final chapter, we witness Ralph fleeing for his life and we see that Roger’s unleashed evil knows no limits.
