What would a DMEO typically do if a large fault is found?

A
  • Rating will find a fault in there department and report it to there operations manager.
  • Operations manger and DMEO will work out a plan to fix the fault.
  • DMEO will explain fault and solution to captain so an understanding of how the operation will be effected then a plan for action can be made (Carry on or go to port)
  • Captain is the ship so all problems effecting operation are passed through captain.
  • If required, MOD main building will get involved to give advice.

What jobs could a MEO do on shore?

A
  1. Technical Authority based in Bristol. Involved in the design of new parts and projects. Also liaise with ship to help diagnose faults.
  2. FOST (Flag officer Sea Training) Ensures the running of the ship is safe a and well. Will board a ship for a week or so to check over everything.
  3. MOD Main Building - Advising admirals on Navy operations in regards to engineering (does the ship have the capability to do what it needs to do)
  4. Work within training at BRNC, HMS Raleigh or HMS Sultan.
  5. Within recruitment.

A
  • Using what was learnt in Militarisation phase in a maritime environment
  • BSSC
  • Learn about maritime navigation, seamanship skills and how to helm small boats.
  • 2 days exercise on HMS Hindostan.
  • 3 Weeks initial sea time. Going around each department learning how ships company operate. Written & oral exam to finish

  • Includes basic combat skills, physical fitness, first aid, firefighting, sea sense, values and standards, operational law, escape and evasion and improvised explosive device awareness.

A

Basic Leadership Development

programme which develops your leadership skills through land based activities. Includes: field crafts, erecting a bivvy, how not to be seen, land navigation etc all on Dartmoor. Navigation exercises over Dartmoor.

What is ABLE

A

Assessed Basic Leadership Exercise.

4 night accessed exercise on Dartmoor which will consist of 2, maybe 3 PLT’s. In between the PLT’s or evenings, cadets do field skills, night navigation fitness sessions and night raids.

What is BSSC

A

Basic Sea Survival Course.

Understanding how to be safe on a ship, involving: firefighting organisation and practical, sea survival theory and practical. Finally, practical damage control exercise in the DRIU (Damage Repair Instructional Unit) at HMS Excellent to prepare for the incident of a sinking ship.

Final stage of training where everything learnt, such as leadership, military skill and navigation, is brought together on an assessed exercise. This includes casualty recovery simulations and tactical simulations in a hostile situation.

What is involved in SEMC

A

System Engineering Management Course

Phase 1 = 14 weeks
Phase 2 = 16 weeks

Learning about gas turbines, diesel generators, hydraulics, air systems, heat exchangers etc

Also learning how to manage an engineering department.

Also includes includes completing ‘Officer of the day’ course, ISSC (Intermediate Sea Safety Course), Divisional Officer course and Officer Leadership Course

- an examination and interview Infront of senior officers, testing everything learnt from the fleet time
