E.T.A. Hoffmann

A

(1776-1822) - job of choice was as a judge, was booted out after the napoleon occupation. He went to work for opera company. He was a very talented writer and critic. He wrote frequently for the emerging musical press in his day.
-Hoffman review of Beethoven 5th Symphony (1810): went beyond good review. Justify Beethoven to the world. Combined it with review of piano trios in 1814 called “Beethoven’s Instrumental Music”. The starting point for Hoffmann was to show that he knew what he was doing. He basically said that it is the readers fault for not understanding Beethoven’s music. He was compared to Shakespeare in that he was written off.

A

Word, tone, and rhythm made up romantic qualities, but Hoffmann argues that it is all about Tone and Rhythm… he thought programmed music is limiting. In the traditional view, song was above instrumental. It’s the performers job to understand it the piece, Hoffmann was the one to introduce this mindset. Relationship of music to the romantic.
