ROOT PLANNING Flashcards

1
Q

Rationale of root planning

A
  • Interrupt or stop progress of disease
    Securing biologically acceptable root surfaces
  • Removal of Diseased Cementum/Induce positive changes in the sub-gingival bacterial flora count and content
  • Resolving inflammation/Create and environment that encourages the tissue to heal/decrease pocket depth
  • Root Smoothness-Facilitate oral hygiene procedures/Increase the effectiveness of the patient’s plaque control/prevent recurrence of the disease
  • Improving or maintaining attachment level
  • Preparing the tissues for surgical procedures/to provide initial preparation for complicated periodontal therapy required for advanced disease

Q

Shank design

A

Straighter shanks are used anteriorly
Multi-angled shanks are used posteriorly
Longer shanks extend more easily into deeper pockets
(e.g. Gracey after five and Mini five)
