Roots Flashcards
Taproot
One main root, usually for storage
Fibrous
Many small roots instead of one
Adventitious
Roots developing from unusual places
Area of maturation
Root hairs as extensions of cell walls of epidermis, for absorption of water and minerals
Area of elongation
Root tip pushed downward by elongation by cells behind it
Area of cell division
Dividing cells of the roots apical meristem
Root cap
Thick cells protecting delicate cells above and behind it also means of detecting gravity
Root growth is a continuous process how ?
1 area replaces another ans only the tip grows downward
In cross section a root appears as 3 concentric rings
- Epidermis
- Cortex
- Stele or vascular cylinder
Epidermis
Thin cuticle, mucilaginous sheath
Cortex
Storage parenchyma, air spaces
Stele or vascular cylinder
Xylem ridges, phloem in btw, pericycle for lateral / branch roots
Endodermis
Innermost sub cylinder of the cortex ( cells with impervious hands, casparian strips of suberin which forces water and its contents to pass through the cell membrane by entering the stele
