1. Introduction: (3)
* To your lower left is the beautiful Repulse Bay Beach, one of Hong Kong’s most popular swimming spots.
* But have you noticed the yellow floating line in the water, marked with buoys?
* That is a shark prevention net—and now is a great time to tell you the story behind it!
2. Key Facts About Shark Prevention Nets: (2)
* Between 1991 and 1995, Hong Kong experienced a series of shark attacks, some of which were fatal.
* The incidents shocked the public and made beach safety a top priority.
3. Government Measures: (3)
* Since then, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has taken strong action to keep swimmers safe.
* Today, the government manages 43 gazetted public beaches, and anti-shark nets have been installed at 39 of them, including Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay.
* Some say the real reason we have shark nets in Hong Kong isn’t just safety—it’s because locals used to eat so much shark fin soup, the sharks came back for revenge!
4. Design & Function: (4)
* These floating nets are specially designed to block large marine animals like sharks, while being harmless to marine life.
* They also help protect swimmers from boats and reduce marine debris reaching the shore.
* The nets are anchored to the seabed using heavy-duty weights and strong mooring points.
* This keeps them secure during strong currents and typhoons.
5. Effectiveness & Safety: (3)
* Since these nets were installed, no shark attacks have been reported at net-protected beaches.
* The LCSD performs regular inspections and maintenance to ensure their integrity.
* If you see a red flag and a shark flag flying—it means shark activity has been detected and swimming is banned.
