RP overview Flashcards
(15 cards)
Aerobic respiration formula
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Formation of carbonic acid formula
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O -> 6H2CO3
Dissociation of carbonic acid into acid and basic components
H2CO3 -> H+ + H2CO3^-
What is the name of the acid and basic components of the dissociation of carbonic acid?
Acidic - H+
Basic - Bicarbonate ion
What is the whole reaction from the products of aerobic respiration to dissociation of carbonic acid?
CO2 + H2O -> H2CO3 -> H+ + HCO3 -
Ventilation formula
Minute ventilation (l/min) = tidal volume (l) x respiratory rate (bpm)
What is hyperventilation
removal of too much CO2 from the body (excessive ventilation) - alkalosis
What is hypoventilation?
removal of too little CO2 from the body (not enough ventilation) - acidosis
Consequences of hypoventilation?
- acidaemia (pH will decrease)
- acidosis causes a build up of carbonic acid
Anaerobic respiration
- doesn’t need O2
- produces lactate due to hypoxaemia (lack of oxygen)
Functions of respiratory system
- speech
- swallowing: upper part of respiratory tract (epiglottis) forms junction with GI tract
- biochemical function: metabolism of blood borne substances
-clotting
Control of clotting
heparin - inhibits coagulation
thromboplastin - promotes coagulation
summary of respiratory system function
speech
swallowing
clotting
biochem functions
blood reservoir for CV system
What term refers to gas exchange between atmosphere and blood?
external respiration
