Q

Sex before marriage - Christian view

A

Sex is a gift from God and should only be done in the union of marriage

A child’s most secure environment for being brought up is where the mum and dad are married

(corinthians 6:18): Flee from sexual immorality. God Spirit dwells within you, so honour God with your body

Ten Commandments: “do not commit adultery” - sex with anyone but your wife/husband is wrong and breaks trust

(Mark 10:6-8) having sex makes and individual to become “one flesh” - sex creates a very strong bond which should only be reserved for a marriage partner

Q

Contraception - Christian (catholic) views

A

Sex should lead to producing children as God commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply

Influenced by theologian Thomas Aquinas - argued humans should have 5 primary purposes on earth; one of which was procreation
He turned these into rules called the ‘primary precepts’.

Rules which he made to help these primary precepts are called ‘secondary precepts’ one of which is ‘do not use contraception’

The catholic church follows these precepts and believe artificial contraception is immoral

Q

A

Contraception can be used well to manage family size

The Bible doesn’t say anything about contraception

It shouldn’t be used to encourage promiscuity - sex is still best within marriage

Q

Adultery - Christian views

A

Believe it is wrong

Marriage is sexually exclusive and should not be shared with anyone else

Ten commandments: Do not commit adultery

Marriage is a sacrement - a gift from God

Adultry goes against this and destroys the special relationship between and husband and wife.

It can harm the family relationships and cause the partner to feel betrayed

Q

Adultery - Muslim views

A

Wrong and seen as harmful to society as it goes against the unity and peace of brotherhood (ummah)

Seen as the worst form of theft

Marriage is seen as a life-long union based on trust, morality and devotion

Vows are exchanged to be faithful

Qu’ran (17:32): Do not approach sexual intercourse. Indeed it is ever an immorality and evil as a way

17
Q

Divorce - (Catholic) Christian views

A

Don’t recognise divorce and regard marriage as a lifelong commitment.

(Matthew: 19:8): Moses permitted you divorce your wives because your hearts were had

(Mark 10:9): Therefore what God has joined together let no one seperate

In a circumstance where a married couple can’t stay together and there is no chance of reconciliation, there is an option for annulment or reconciliation

18
Q

Divorce - Muslim views

A

Couples facing difficulty should reconcile

Before divorce takes place, an imam and the Muslim community and would seek to try and help them

Qu’ran (4:35): “If you both desire reconciliation, God it will cause it between them”

Extended families also play a vital role in trying to help the couple sort out any issues.

However, they recognise reconciliation may not always be possible, so accept divorce as a last resort. They believe they should be free remarry in the future.

19
Q

Remarriage - Christian views

A

(Matthew 19:9): I tell you anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and married another woman commits adultery.

Most Roman Catholics will try to resolve problems in their marriage to avoid divorce as it is forbidden by their Church

20
Q

Remarriage - Muslim views

A

Although it is not encouraged, most Muslims agree that divorce is permitted if a marriage has broken down, and generally Muslims are permitted to re-marry if they so wish.

Sunni Muslims do not require witnesses. The husband must express his desire for a divorce on three separate occasions with a waiting period of three months.

Shi’ah Muslims require two witnesses, followed by a waiting period before a marriage can end.

If a woman initiates a divorce it is called khula. There must be a waiting period to ensure the woman is not pregnant.

Extended families also play a vital role in trying to help the couple sort out any issues. However, in some situations a couple might feel divorce is their only option
