hardware
the physical parts of a computing device that we can touch and see - the mouse, the screen, the keyboard, a printer, etc.
software
to sets of instructions that ‘tell’ a computing device what to do
data
unprocessed items. This can include text, numbers, images, audio and video.
information
result of the processing of data and should be useful and meaningful.
computer
multi-purpose, electronic device that can receive input, process the input, produce output and store data / the results of the processing.
application software
group of programs (apps) that perform specific tasks for us as users.

the cloud
is simply computers (and storage space) made available through the internet.
convergence
refers to the trend where technologies and functions that required different devices in the past are combined into one single device that has all or some of the functionality of each of the separate devices.
ict system
combination of hardware, software, data, processes and people
- with the goal of collecting, processing, storing, retrieving and communicating data and information.
source code
programming code written by a programmer to create a computer program. One needs this code to make changes or to fix any ‘bugs’ or mistakes in the program that may cause it to work improperly at times.
software piracy
illegal copying, distributing and installing of proprietary software. In an attempt to crack down on software piracy, most software now requires online activation or registration.
end user licence agreement
legal agreement that describes what you may and may not
do with the software.
sensors
device that detects and responds to some input from the physical environment such as light, heat, motion, moisture and radioactivity. Mobile devices have built-in sensors that constantly provide input to those devices.
network
collection of computers and other devices such as smartphones and tablets that are connected either via cable or wirelessly.
streaming
playing a media file while receiving the data and without first downloading the complete file.
Synchronization
means that when changes are made to a file stored on your computer and in the cloud, the files will be updated to the latest version in both locations.
personal area network
organised around an individual.
han
small network within a home environment
lan
connects computers in a small area such as a school, university campus or company offices in one building
intellectual property
is a broad concept that recognises the ownership of the person that came up with the original idea or concept.
copyright
refers to the legal right to make copies and to publish and sell products.
