Rules For Stress Flashcards
(4 cards)
Rule 1
Words ending in S, N, or a vowel (a, e, I, o, u) have their major stress on the 2nd to last syllable of the word
Rule 2
Words ending in consonants other than S, N have their major stress on the last syllable
Rule 3
When the first two rules do not apply, based on the spoken language, a written accent mark is needed on the stressed syllable (always on a vowel)
Diphthong
A diphthong is a vowel containing both a strong vowel (a, e, o) and a weak vowel (I, u) or two weal vowels.
- An accent mark on the weak vowel breaks up the diphthong when a strong and a weak one are next to each other
- to break up a diphthong made of two weak vowels, the first one is given a written accent mark
