RX qs Flashcards
(32 cards)
Px renal tract stones
intermittent flank pain radiating to inner thigh and testicles.
calcium stones are radiopaque
Urachal cyst/sinus is a remnant of what?
AllaNtois (becomes mediaN umbilical ligament)
What do fibrates do?
Increase HDL by increasing PPAR-alpha activity
What do mast cells have receptors for?
The Fc portion of IgE
When mast cells bind IgE and degranuate, what do they rls?
Histamine, heparin, eosinophillic chemotactic factors
Where are the mito located in sperm?
In the neck of the sperm. Therefore, krebs takes place in the sperm neck.
What is methotrexate
Folic acid analog, inhibits purine synthesis- so toxic to cells that replicate quickly (eg gut)
What is Chlorpromazine?
Typical anti-psychotic. Blocks D2 receptors. So do thioridizine, haloperidol, fluphenazine.
What does dopamine do the pituitary?
Prevents release of prolactin. If you block dopamine, will cause prolactin rls, leading to galactorrhea
Adverse rxns assoc’d with androgen therapy
Premature closure of epiphyseal plates, leukopenia, decreased spermatogenesis, increased LDL, male pattern baldness
How do you treat hypogonadism secondary to hypothal-pit-gonadal axis?
Androgenic steroids.
Also used to treat primary hypogonadism (leydig cell dysfn)
What drug is used to treat both SIADH and Lyme dz?
Demeclocycline (tetracycline analog)
What is an adverse effect of Demeclocycline?
Nephrogenic DI (lack of renal response to ADH even though body is making it) Polydipsia, polyuria, hypernatremia, hypotonic urine, serum hyperosmolarity, increased serum ADH
Treatment for enuresis (bedwetting)?
desmopressin (synthetic ADH) or TCAs
Crohn’s vs ulcerative colitis: which IBD carries an increased risk of colorectal carcinoma
ulcerative colitis
HUGE topic!!
Crohn’s vs ulcerative colitis: which IBD involves the rectum?
Crohn’s involves the anus but spares the rectum.
Ulcerative colitis always involves the rectum.
RLQ pain, diarrhea, fever, arthralgia, weight loss
IBD
Distinguish b/t Crohns and UC.
What is Job’s Syndrome (Hyper IgE)?
Impaired interferon-gamma, resulting in impaired macrophage and neutrophil activity.
What diseases/infections do pts with Job Syndrome present with?
staphylococcal abscesses, onychomycosis (nail fungus), recurrent bronchitis with pneumonia formation and pneumatocele development, chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis
Rate-determining enz for:
Cholesterol synthesis
HMG-CoA reductase
Rate-det enz for
De novo purine synth
Glutamine-PRPP amidotransferase
Rate-det enz
De novo pyrimidine synth
Carbamoyl phosphatase synthase II
