S1 Science Flashcards
What’s difference between contact. And non contact forces?
Contact force touches the thing that they are effective Noncontact forces do not touch the thing that they are affecting
Give three examples of contact force
Surface tension air resistance friction
Give three examples of non-contact forces
Magnetism gravity and static electricity
What causes friction
Friction is a resistive force which opposes the direction of motion of an object this means it acts in the opposite direction to motion
How do you calculate pressure
Pressure equals Force divided by area
What is the unit of measurement for pressure
Newtons per centimetre squared
What is the formula for calculating weight
Weight equals maths times gravitational field strength
What is air resistance
Air resistance is the frictional force air exerts against a moving object. As an object moves, air resistance slows it down. The faster the object’s motion, the greater the air resistance exerted against it.
What does the term streamlining mean
An object that is shaped to travel through air or water with as little resistance as possible
State two examples in sport where athletes streamline to reduce frictional forces
Tight clothing thin bicycle tyres
What is mass
The amount of matter in an object
What is weight
Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object
How would your mass and weight vary on different planets
Each planet has its own gravitational field strength
If a boy was 500 N what is his mass
50 N
If a girl has a mass of 70 kg what is the mass in space where there is no gravitational field strength
70 kg their mass will stay the same
