They affirm that Christians are part of the Body of Christ, the Church, with all its responsibilities.
What is baptism?
Baptism is when people become members of the Christian Church.
What happens during baptism?
The person is acknowledged as a child of God, receives God’s saving grace, and enters a new life with Jesus Christ.
What significant event occurred during Jesus’ baptism?
The heavens opened and God spoke, showing God’s approval of his son’s mission.
What is infant baptism?
Infant baptism is the practice of baptizing babies to remove original sin and welcome them into the Church.
What do Catholic and Orthodox Christians believe about original sin?
They believe everyone is a descendant of Adam and Eve and has a tendency to sin, needing salvation, even babies.
What is said during an infant baptism?
The priest/minister says, ‘I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’ while pouring holy water over the baby’s head.
What symbols are used during infant baptism?
Symbols include making the sign of the cross, anointing with oil, dressing the baby in white, and giving the parents a candle lit from the paschal candle.
What do some Christians believe about baptism for babies?
Some Christians, such as Baptists and Pentecostalists, believe a baby is too young to understand baptism and should wait until they can make a mature decision.
What is believers’ baptism?
Believers’ baptism involves full immersion into a pool, symbolising cleansing from sin and rising to new life with Christ.
What may happen during believers’ baptism?
Each person may read a Bible passage and give a brief testimony of their faith in Jesus as their personal saviour.
