Safe Lifting Flashcards

1
Q

Load Recognition is important BEFORE you lift. Name five things you should do BEFORE lifting the load.

A
  • Weigh up the load by rocking or gentle tipping
  • Determine it’s heaviest point.
  • If irregular in shape, lift with heaviest side next to your body.
  • Always wear gloves to avoid cuts from sharp edges or debris.
  • Be aware that liquids in drums, tanks or containers can easily become unstable.
  • Always ask for help if the load appears to be heavy to lift alone.
  • Be careful as it’s easier to slip or trip when carrying a heavy weight.
  • Check out and plan the route beforehand.

Q

Why are your legs less likely to be injured when lifting?

A

Typically, legs house the strongest muscles in the body and should be the main muscles used when lifting. If lifting correctly, your legs would be unlikely to suffer injury.
