What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the process of protecting individuals, especially vulnerable populations, from harm, abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
What is the primary goal of safeguarding?
To promote the welfare and well-being of individuals, particularly those at risk due to age, health, disability, or other factors.
List types of abuse.
Physical, Domestic, Sexual, Psychological/Emotional, Financial, Modern Slavery, Discriminatory, Organisational, Neglect, Acts of Omission, Self-neglect.
What is physical abuse?
Causing bodily harm such as hitting, slapping, or injuring.
What is emotional abuse?
Causing mental distress through threats, humiliation, or controlling behaviour.
What is financial abuse?
Illegal or improper use of a person’s finances, often affecting the elderly.
What is modern slavery?
Exploiting individuals through forced labour, debt bondage, or human trafficking.
Name the 6 key principles of safeguarding.
Empowerment, Prevention, Protection, Proportionality, Partnership, Accountability.
What does empowerment mean in safeguarding?
Encouraging individuals to have a voice and make informed decisions.
What does prevention mean in safeguarding?
Taking action before harm occurs through awareness and training.
What does protection mean in safeguarding?
Providing care and support when needed to prevent harm.
What does proportionality mean in safeguarding?
Responding appropriately to the level of risk.
What does partnership mean in safeguarding?
Working collaboratively with different agencies to protect individuals.
What does accountability mean in safeguarding?
Ensuring those involved in safeguarding are responsible for their actions.
What is the Children Act 1989/2004?
Legal foundation for safeguarding children in England and Wales.
What is the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006?
Prevents unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups; established DBS checks.
What is the Care Act 2014?
Law in England for safeguarding adults at risk of abuse or neglect.
What does the Mental Capacity Act 2005 cover?
Framework for decisions made for individuals lacking mental capacity.
What is the Domestic Abuse Act 2021?
Protects victims and supports survivors of domestic abuse.
What does the FGM Act 2003 do?
Criminalises female genital mutilation in the UK.
What is the Prevent strategy?
Safeguards individuals from radicalisation and terrorism.
What to do if someone is in immediate danger?
Call 999.
What to do if safeguarding concern is not urgent?
Follow local safeguarding policies and procedures.
Who are pharmacists accountable to for safeguarding?
Their professional regulatory body (e.g., GPhC), employers, and law.
