Salivating Flashcards
(12 cards)
NS (neutral stimulus)
initially has no effect
A neutral stimulus doesn’t trigger any particular response at first, but when used together with an unconditioned stimulus, it can effectively stimulate learning, eventually becoming a conditioned stimulus.
CS (conditioned stimulus)
ns becomes the cs
After repeated pairing with the unconditioned stimulus, the neutral stimulus becomes a conditioned stimulus, and it now elicits a response.
USC (unconditioned stimulus)
leads to ucr without any prior training
something that naturally triggers an automatic response.
Conditioned
Learnt
unconditioned
didn’t learn/not learnt
CR (conditioned response)
A conditioned response is a learned response to a previously neutral stimulus.
UCR (unconditioned response)
this is always automatic, unlearnt response
a natural, reflexive, and unlearned reaction to a specific stimulus
the automatic reaction to that stimulus
Acquisition
involves the development
of a conditioned response through
the repeated association between
the unconditioned stimulus
and the conditioned stimulus
Extinction
involves the disappearance
of a conditioned response, following a lack of pairing of the unconditioned stimulus with the conditioned stimulus.
Spontaneous recovery
is when, following extinction and a rest period, the conditioned response reappears at the presentation of the conditioned
stimulus. It can occur multiple times, but never at the same strength as the original conditioned response.
Stimulus generalisation
involves the tendency for a stimulus similar to the original conditioned stimulus to produce a response that is similar (but not necessarily identical) to the conditioned response.
Stimulus discrimination
occurs when an individual only elicits the conditioned response to the original conditioned stimulus – not to other stimuli that are similar to the conditioned stimulus.
