Factors to consider when selecting a suitable location:
Centrally located in densely populated area (Geographical Area)
▪ Products and services offered must be in demand by the market that populates the area
▪ Facilities of the location: be situated close to other businesses that attract clients’ e.g. shopping
mall, banks.
▪ Be visible to passing clients
▪ Easily accessible by providing sufficient parking facilities
▪ Safe at all times
▪ Competition in the area

Leasing the premises
- the premises is leased in terms of a lease agreement where the ownership of the premises remains with the lessor
Advantages and disadvantages with leasing the premises
Advantage: Capital will not be tied up in purchasing premises but will be available to
get the business operational.
Disadvantage: Cash is spent on paying an expense (rent) in stead of repaying a loan or
bond to acquire a fixed asset that will increase in value over time
Buying the premises
When buying the premises you are acquiring a fixed asset
Advantages and disadvantages of buying the premises
Advantage: Acquisition of a fixed asset that could be sold at a profit later on.
Disadvantage: Obtaining the loan or bond can be difficult if the business venture is new
and there is no certainty whether the business will be successful.
Need to create the following in the space available:
➢Reception area
➢Treatment rooms
➢Changing facilities for clients
➢Staff facility
➢Stock room and/or storage area
➢Bathroom facilities for staff and clients
➢Laundry room
Decor
- should reflect the type of clients you wish to attract.
- if space is limited use pastel colours to give the impression the room is bigger.
- avoid using too much white as this can create an atmosphere that is hard, cold and clinical
Lighting
- good lighting is important for the therapist to perform treatments efficiently.
- lighting for the client should create a relaxed atmosphere therefore soft lighting should
be used.
Power
- ensure there are sufficient electrical power points.
- these power points must be
strategically placed to avoid overcrowding of equipment.
Walls
must be easy to clean
Flooring
- use a non-slip floor covering which is easy to clean in treatment rooms.
- reception area should be carpeted to create a warm atmosphere and promote a feeling of comfort.
Staff facilities
- an area should be allocated for staff to change and relax between clients and to eat
lunch.
Ventilation
- ensure there is sufficient ventilation in each treatment room provided by windows or
vents.
Heating
- rooms should have heating facilities for use during colder months and fans or air-cons to
cool the rooms during summer months
Plumbing
- ensure there is sufficient access to plumbing and water facilities in all rooms where
water is required.
Security measures
▪ Ensure the building has an alarm and that all outside entrances have lockable security gates.
▪ Never leave money in the till over night; bank money daily otherwise place in a safe
overnight and leave till open.
▪ Store all stock in a lockable room or cupboard or retail items can be displayed in lockable
display cabinets.
▪ Provide clients and staff with lockable unit to store their valuables when in treatments.
▪ Clients records are confidential and should be kept in a lockable file cabinet that only the
therapists have access to
▪ Be aware of clients – ensure all money is taken in directly after the treatment and clear records
should be kept for courses of treatments i.e. exactly when the client paid and for how many
treatments.
Selecting a suitable name
➢The name must identify with the type of business or the service that you provide.
➢Must convey a message to potential clients of what the business is about.
➢Must be original and not resemble a name that already exists.
➢Must comply with the rules as set out by the registrar.
SALON MANAGER/ESS
- A person who co-ordinates the efforts of other persons in order to achieve the goals and
objectives of a business.

Employing staff
When starting a beauty clinic the most important staff requirements are:
➢A receptionist
➢A fully qualified therapist
➢Bookkeeper
➢Cleaning lady
A service contract
An agreement in writing whereby the employee undertakes to supply his/her labour or services
to the employer, who in return agrees to reward the employee by means of remuneration
The following info must be on the service contract:
▪ Working hours
▪ Remuneration
▪ Number of days leave per annum
▪ Number of days sick-leave per annum
▪ Other benefits
▪ A bonus if the employee is entitled to such an annul payment
▪ Number of days or months notice required if employee resigns
▪ A trial period required by the employer when employing a new staff member
Role of a receptionist
- the receptionist is one of the most important members off staff in a salon and is vital for the efficient
running of a salon. - the receptionist is the link between the client and therapist and often the first
contact that the client has with the salon. - a receptionist therefore determines the future relationship with the client and salon
A good receptionist should be able to do the following:
o Schedule appointments – this requires that she have knowledge of all the services offered, their
cost and the time required for each treatment
o Have good telephone manner
o Able to handle clients in the correct manner and deal with upset clients
o Keep record of clients appointments
o Take money and log payments
o Sell a treatment or product
o Prepare treatment rooms before and after appointments
*the appearance of a receptionist is very important as well as the way she conducts herself around
clients.
