Salts Flashcards
(15 cards)
What type of ions do acids contain?
H+
What type of ions do bases contain?
OH-
What do s, l, g and aq mean?
s = solid l = liquid g = gas aq = aqueous
What is the ionic equation for neutralization?
H+ + OH- = water (H2O)
When is ammonia commonly used?
Plant fertilizers
What is the difference between a base and an alkali?
Bases = metal oxides or hydroxides Alkalis = soluble hydroxides
How are ammonium salts made?
Ammonia is dissolved in water to produce an alkaline solution - this can be used to neutralize an acid to produce ammonium salts
What is a base?
A substance with a pH between 7 and 14, commonly a metal
Give 3 ways in which a soluble salt can be prepared?
Acid + metal
Acid + alkali
Acid + insoluble base
How can precipitation of unwanted salts be used to treat drinking water?
Filter the precipitate to remove unwanted salts
How can a solid salt be obtained from a salt solution?
Evaporation - leaves behind salt crystals
What salt is made from nitric acid?
Nitrate salt
What salt is made from hydrochloric acid?
Chloride salt
What salt is made from sulphuric acid?
Sulfate salt
What is the pH range for a base?
7 - 14
