Dement and Kleitmen.
There were 7 adult males and 2 adult females. 5 of them were studied intensively and the other 4 were used to confirm the findings of the study. The 5 that were studied intensively spent between 6 and 17 nights in the lab and were tested with 50-77 awakenings. Those who were used to confirm the findings of the study spent between 1 or 2 nights in the lab and were tested with 4-10 awakenings in total. Each participant was identified with a pair of initials.

There was 16 right handed London taxi drivers (mean age was 44 years old. Range was 32-62). Their range of experience as licensed London taxi drivers was between 1.5 and 42 years. (Mean 14.3 years). A matched control group was selected.

Thigpen and Cleckley.
Eve’s real name was Chris Sizemore. 3 personalities - EW/EB/Jane. She was 25 years old when first referred to the therapists due to frequent headaches and blackouts. She was married with one child.
Rosenhan.
8 pseudo patients of various occupations. 5 males/3 female. Self-selected by Rosenhan. 12 hospitals were targeted, old and new, in different story States in the U.S.
Baron Cohen.
16 high functioning adults with autism/Asperger syndrome. 13 males/3 female. Recruited through their doctors and an advert in the National Autistic Society’s magazine. 10 people with Tourette’s. Recruited through a referral centre in London. 50 adults with no clinical condition. (25 males/25 females).

Experiment 1: 45 students.

Sue Savage Rumbaugh.
2 Pygmy chimps: Kanzi - 4 years old/male. Mulika - 3 years old/female/Kanzi’s sister.
2 common chimps: Austin - 9 years old/males. Sherman - 10 years old/male.

Little Hans was a Jewish boy from Vienna, Austria. His real name was Herbert Graf. He was 5 years old at the beginning of the study.

252 boys and girls aged between 5 and 8 1/2. From various primary schools / pre-schools in Devon.

332 males responded to a leaflet drop and advertisements in the national press. They had to undergo a screening process to ensure that they themselves were not ‘fragile’ and were not a threat to anyone else involved in the research.

Stage 1: the respondents had to take a series of psychometric a tests assessing clinical variables such as depression and paranoia and social variables such as racism and social dominance.

Stage 2: A full weekend of assessment by clinical psychologists.

Stage 3: they underwent police checks and character references. A total of 27 men got through the screening process. Of these 15 were selected in order to have a reasonable mix of age, social class and ethnic group. They were then out into groups of three and matched for personalities. 1 person from each group was then allocated randomly to the position of guard.

Self-selected/volunteer sample. Direct mailing/newspaper advertisement. 40 male participants, aged 20-50 years of age. All from the New Haven district of North America.

Opportunity sampling of 4550 people travelling on the trains. 43 passengers were on average on each carriage. Average of 8 passengers in the critical area.
