Sampling Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is simple random sampling?
any 2 groups of equal size within population where everyone is equally likely to be selected
What is stratified sampling?
Stratify population into homogenous groups then use simple random sampling to draw samples from each group
What is cluster sampling?
when natural sampling unit is a group/cluster of individual units, sampling within a group/cluster
What is systematic sampling?
the selection of every kth element from a sampling frame or from a sequential stream of potential respondents (e.g. every 12th visitor)
what is quota sampling?
specify desired number of respondents with certain characteristics
What is snowball sampling?
relies on referrals from initial respondents
what is judgement sampling?
researcher selects sample based on their judgement
Population of inference
population about which the researcher intends to draw conclusions
target population
population of inference minus any groups the researcher has chosen to disregard
frame population
portion of the target population to which the survey material/devices delimit, identify, and subsequently allow access
survey sample
those members of the sampling frame who were chosen to be surveyed
